A season of change gets underway today at The Limtiaco Co., which will henceforth be called TLC PR.
"This is a very exciting new chapter that allows us to embark on our 25th year with higher expectations and a bigger vision," founder and CEO Ruth Limtiaco told TheBuzz.
People in and around the media and public relations industries have long used "TLC" as shorthand in referring to the company, and Limtiaco "always felt that TLC as an acronym for ‘tender, loving care’ is an appropriate description of the way we approach our client and media relationships," she said.
So it’s official, as is the appointment of retired U.S. Air Force Col. Maria Carl as executive vice president.
"I love the fact that (TLC PR) is a woman-owned firm," she said, following her 23-year career in the male-dominated military, which she also loved.
Carl became acquainted with TLC PR President Teddi Anderson while both were serving on an Air Force-civilian advisory board. One discussion led to another until decisions were made and a deal signed.
Prior to retiring at the beginning of September, Carl served as director of public affairs for U.S. Pacific Air Forces, and as such was the senior Air Force executive in charge of all strategic communications and public relations in the Asia-Pacific region. Carl was the principal adviser serving the Pacific Air Forces Command leadership, directing communications strategy and policy in Japan, Korea, Hawaii, Alaska and Guam.
She also served as the principal communications adviser to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 2002 to 2004.
She also is a combat veteran.
Prior to her military service, Carl was a news producer for "Nightline" on ABC with Ted Koppel and received an Emmy nomination during that time.
Limtiaco, the company, started in 1989 focused primarily on the travel industry.
Carl’s experience in military affairs will give TLC PR some heft in that arena so it can "work with more government- and defense-related" projects, Carl said.
Married to Michael Rogers, Carl is a mother of two: daughter Bella, 8, and Ryan, 1.
A three-dimensional presentation of the new TLC PR logo greets visitors to its new offices in the Lum Yip Kee Building on King Street, for which the company recently signed a long-term lease.
Its website, also renewed, greets visitors with updates on client work that can be refreshed daily.
