Kealakehe football player David Fangupo is staying home after all.
The 6-foot-2, 348-pound running back/nose tackle signed with the University of Hawaii on Friday morning. Waveriders coach Sam Papalii faxed the paperwork to UH coach Norm Chow.
"To me, it just eases his mind knowing it’s over," Papalii said.
Brigham Young University showed serious interest in the bulldozing ballcarrier. Georgia Tech even offered a scholarship during recruiting season at the last minute by phone.
"To me, that wasn’t very professional," said Papalii, a former college assistant coach and recruiter.
Former UH offensive coordinator Paul Johnson is the head coach at Georgia Tech.
Fangupo is not quite an NCAA Clearinghouse qualifier, but he’s close.
"It’s not a complete deal yet," Papalii said. "But he knows they’re committed to him. The main thing is he takes care of things academic-wise. It’s a great opportunity."
