» Punahou English teacher M. Thomas Gammarino received the 2012 Space Foundation Lucy Enos Memorial Scholarship.
Gammarino was to use the scholarship to attend one of the Space Foundation’s Space Across the Curriculum teacher professional development courses in Colorado Springs, Colo., this summer.
The Lucy Enos Memorial Scholarship is available to educators of Hawaiian or part-Hawaiian descent, or who teach children of Hawaiian ancestry. It covers tuition, fees, travel expenses, meals and lodging for the recipient to spend a week in Colorado Springs attending a Space Across the Curriculum course.
» This year’s recipient of the national Paragon Award for Water Safety is Ralph Goto, administrator of the Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division for the City and County of Honolulu.
The award is given by the International Swimming Hall of Fame and presented annually to an individual for outstanding service and contributions in aquatic disciplines and safety around the water.
"We are delighted that Ralph Goto has won this important ocean safety award," Mayor Peter Carlisle said in a press release. "We congratulate him for his efforts to make our waters safer for swimmers."
Goto has worked for the city since 1981 and has made the dozens of ocean events held every year on Oahu safer through his stewardship and management.
