Maui woman killed in hit-and-run crash in Waiehu

Maui police are asking for the public’s help in finding the driver of a truck or SUV who fled the scene after striking and killing a 31-year-old Maui woman overnight along Kahekili Highway.

The woman, identified as Brandy Mendes, was walking toward Waihee on the makai side of the highway when an unknown vehicle, traveling in the same direction, hit her sometime between 7:40 p.m. Thursday and 5:49 a.m. today, Maui police said. The vehicle fled in the Waihee direction.

Mendes’ body was found lying along the shoulder of the highway shortly before 6 a.m. today, just south of Kamaile Street in Waiehu.

Police said the vehicle is dark red metallic in color and believed to be a Chevy Tahoe, GMC Yukon, Chevy Silverado, or GMC Sierra-type vehicle from the model years 1997 to 2002. It will have front-end damage and possibly a damaged or missing passenger-side headlight.

Maui police ask that anyone with information on the crash call CrimeStoppers at 242-6966.
