BABYLON, N.Y. >> An unemployed man suspected of faking his own drowning at a New York beach has pleaded not guilty to a scheme to collect on a life insurance policy.

Raymond Roth was ordered held on $100,000 bail Wednesday in a Long Island courtroom. He was charged with insurance fraud, conspiracy to commit insurance fraud and falsely reporting an incident.

Roth was arrested earlier Wednesday. He had been at a hospital receiving psychiatric treatment for about 10 days.

He was expected to post bail. Roth’s son reported him missing on July 28 after going for a swim at Jones Beach.

After he vanished, authorities conducted an extensive rescue search for several days before Roth was reported to be at a Florida resort. He later got a speeding ticket in South Carolina.
