HEAT OF THE MOMENT: A geologist shielded his face from the intense heat as he took a sample of active lava Monday on the Kahaualea 2 flow at Kilauea Volcano. The chemistry of the lava is analyzed and used to study changes in the magmatic system. Geologists have found breakouts active in only the northern half of the flow with a narrow finger extending northeast into the forest. The Kahaualea 2 flow, fed by the Puu Oo vent since early May, is also burning forests at other contact points along its northern edge.
