Senate confirms district judge for Maui
The state Senate voted unanimously Monday to confirm Lloyd Poelman, a Wailuku attorney, as a district judge on Maui.
Poelman is a partner in Poelman & Langa and has also served as a per diem Family Court judge. He was nominated by Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald.
The appointment is for a six-year term.
Poelman has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah and a law degree from Brigham Young Univer- sity.
Caldwell, managing director go to Chicago
Mayor Kirk Caldwell left for Chicago on Monday night to attend the fall meeting of the Urban Land Institute and participate in a panel discussion on public-private partnership developments.
Caldwell is scheduled to return Saturday.
The mayor will participate Thursday in the institute’s Rose Center 2013 Mayors’ Forum along with the mayors of Indianapolis; Memphis, Tenn.; and Portland, Ore. The theme is "Starting and Sustaining Relationships with Private Sector Partners."
Last month Caldwell was named as a fellow by the institute’s Rose Center for Public Leadership.
Managing Director Ember Shinn also will attend the conference. Director of Budget and Fiscal Services Nelson Koyanagi is acting mayor while Caldwell is out of state.
Washington man is ID’d as crash victim
Maui police identified the Washington state visitor killed in a moped crash Saturday as 36-year-old Rama Fire.
Fire died at about 10:38 p.m. Saturday after his moped crossed the centerline on Kokomo Road in Haiku and collided with a 2003 Audi sedan.
The driver of the Audi, a 43-year-old Haiku woman, and her passengers, a 20-year-old Haiku man and a 17-year-old Makawao girl, were not injured.
Police said Fire was not wearing a helmet, and the occupants in the Audi were wearing seat belts.
Police were still investigating whether speed, alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.
The death is Maui’s 13th traffic death this year, compared with 20 at the same time last year.
County collects old electronics for recycling
Kauai County officials are reminding the public that obsolete or unwanted electronic products are being accepted for recycling at the Kauai Resource Center on the second Friday and Saturday of each month.
The next collection of the items commonly called e-waste takes place Friday and Saturday at 3460 Ahukini Road.
Drop-offs can be made between 7:45 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. On-site assistance is available for offloading large items.
All collected e-waste is shipped to Electronic Recyclers International in California, where it is processed and recycled.
