Hawaii head coach Norm Chow confirmed that slotback Justin Clapp and safety Leroy Lutu are now on football scholarship.
Clapp will be a fourth-year junior this season. Lutu, who began his UH career as a basketball player, will be a senior.
Both have prominent fathers. Carl Clapp is UH’s associate athletic director. Lutu’s father, Leroy, is a former multi-sport star from University High who went on to play at Washington.
Clapp is a versatile receiver who can be used in the slot or as a wideout. Lutu is a hard-hitting safety. Both also play on special teams.
Bright on personal leave
Tight end Darius Bright has been granted a leave of absence to take care of a personal matter. It is not known how many days of training camp he will miss.
Tight end Clark Evans, who had been held out of training-camp workouts to focus on his academic workload, has been restored to the active roster. Evans transferred from a junior college.
Safety John Hardy-Tuliau and offensive tackle Jordan Loeffler are in training camp but not participating in drills. They receive physical-therapy treatments at UH, then return to the base for meeting and light workouts.
Grimes heads back in
After missing a week of practices after experiencing headaches, cornerback Tony Grimes has been cleared to practice.
Grimes had a headache following the third practice of training camp. He did not suffer a concussion, but was held out of contact drills as a precaution. The coaches also took away his helmet.
"They know if they let me have my helmet, I might have gone out there and taken a couple of snaps," Grimes said.
His helmet was returned on Monday morning.
"They care about our safety here," Grimes said. "They treated it more than it was. I sat out for a while, but now I’m finally cleared to come back. I’m ready to get the intensity. I’m ready to go 100 percent."
Grimes and Mike Edwards are considered to be the Warriors’ No. 1 cornerbacks.
Sellers feels right at home
It is somewhat of a homecoming for safety Mike Sellers this week.
The Warriors are training at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. Sellers lived on Fort Shafter from the third through the eighth grades.
"We traveled to every base — Schofield, Hickam, Kaneohe," Sellers said. "Base is like home to me. Everyone says base is like the military’s own sanctuary, and it is."
Sellers moved to Hawaii when he was in the third grade. After his mother retired from the military, his family moved to Ewa Beach.
Sellers joined the Warriors as a cornerback. He played nickelback as a true freshman in 2011. This past spring, he was at cornerback before being shifted to safety.
"They tossed me in there and told me to learn it," Sellers said. "I didn’t know anything. But Bubba (Poueu-Luna) and John (Hardy-Tuliau) helped me make the transition to safety. They definitely got the message across."
Sellers said he feels better suited for safety.
"It’s definitely more comfortable for me," Sellers said. "At corner, I had a little trouble moving my feet. At safety, I have more freedom."
