A 26-year-old local musician who has a history of assault was arrested early Friday morning for allegedly stabbing his live-in girlfriend with an 8-inch butter knife.
Police arrested Kaipo Kapua at 1:55 a.m. at their Kahaluu home on suspicion of attempted murder and kidnapping, but he has not been charged.
Kapua and his 23-year-old girlfriend got into an argument at about 9 a.m. Thursday, and the argument escalated, police said.
He then allegedly began choking the woman and threatened to kill her. She was stabbed in the right knee, causing a deep puncture wound, police said.
Kapua allegedly would not allow the girlfriend to leave their Mapele Road home.
While he was asleep, the woman called 911, left the home and drove to the Kaneohe Police Station where she reported the attack. She was treated for her injury at the Castle Medical Center, police said.
In April police issued a CrimeStoppers bulletin for Kapua, who had disappeared but resurfaced the next day. Friends reported his disappearance after he had an argument with his live-in girlfriend and hadn’t been seen for nearly 24 hours, according to media reports.
In 2010, Kapua pleaded no contest to a third-degree assault charge. A Circuit Court judge ordered him to pay a $150 fine and $2,026 in restitution, according to online court records.
He also has a 2007 drunken driving conviction.
In a November interview with Honolulu Pulse about the release of his self-titled R&B EP, Kapua said in addition to making music, he worked at UFC Gym BJ Penn in Kakaako and had two young children.
