Hou, Jang look to advance at Q school
Corie Hou and Anna Jang sit on the bubble going into today’s final round of the Stage II LPGA Qualifying Tournament, at Venice, Fla.
Hou, a former Rainbow Wahine from Australia, is tied for 85th after a third-round 74 Thursday left her at 6-over-par 221. Jang, a Punahou graduate who won the 2007 state high school championship, shot 75 and has a share of 99th, at 222.
Kalani graduate Nicole Sakamoto shot the day’s low round among Hawaii golfers, firing a 72. At 224, she is tied for 122nd. Maui’s Shayna Miyajima (73) is two shots behind that and Hilo’s Britney Yada is at 75—231.
The top 80 and ties after today advance to the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament, Dec. 4-8 at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Top finishers in the final stage earn 2014 LPGA membership and all others who make the cut get status on the Symetra Tour.
UH to play BYU-Hawaii in men’s basketball
The Hawaii men’s basketball team will play an exhibition against Brigham Young-Hawaii at the Stan Sheriff Center on Halloween, UH announced on Thursday.
Tipoff is at 7 p.m. for the Oct. 31 game, which will be free admission.
Attending fans are encouraged by UH to donate a non-perishable (canned) food item for the Hawaii Foodbank, with the same for the UH women’s basketball team’s 7 p.m. exhibition vs. Hawaii Hilo at the Sheriff on Oct. 30. The UH men will help collect food items prior to the women’s game, while the Rainbow Wahine will help collect before the men’s game.
Children in costume for the Halloween game will receive candy at the main gate.
The Rainbow Warriors’ intrasquad Green & White Scrimmage is on Oct. 19 and the regular-season opener vs. Tennessee State is Nov. 8.
