SUP World Series at Turtle Bay
Some of the top stand-up paddle boarders, including defending world champion Connor Baxter of Maui, will compete in this weekend’s Turtle Bay Summer Paddle Challenge, part of the Stand-Up World Series.
Saturday’s distance race is from Hukilau Beach in Laie to Turtle Bay. Sunday’s sprint course fronts the Turtle Bay Resort.
Other featured competitors include Hawaii’s Slater Trout, Noa Ginella, Kody Kerbox, Kaeo Abbey and Halie Harrison. There is also a prone division in both the distance and sprint races, and an OC1 long-distance race.

Volcano rain forest runs set for Aug. 18
The third Volcano Rain Forest Runs, with races of 5K, 10k and a half marathon, are scheduled for Aug. 18 at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on Hawaii island.
Packet pick-up and late registration is Aug. 17 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at the Volcano Art Center’s Ni‘aulani Campus. There are also free guided rain forest tours beginning at 10 a.m. and a welcome lunch at 11 a.m.
The half marathon begins at 7:30 a.m. There is also a free keiki fun run for ages 1-7.

Lili‘uokalani races coming up
A record number of international entries is expected for next month’s 41st Queen Lili‘uokalani Long Distance Outrigger Canoe Races in Kailua-Kona.
The Labor Day weekend event begins Saturday, Sept. 1, with single-hull races and includes an evening torchlight parade of paddlers. The women’s race is 18 miles from Kailua Bay to Honaunau with the men’s race an 18-mile return to Kailua.
The double-hull competition on Sunday, Sept. 2, is 6 miles from Kailua to Lyman’s and back. Other events include 6-mile races in OC1, OC2, and 18-under OC6; and stand-up and stock paddle boards of various distances.
The Sept. 3 Ali‘i Challenge combines paddling, running and skills contests. The deadline to enter is Aug. 22.
More than 2,500 paddlers are expected to compete over the three days. The event is sponsored by Kai Opua Canoe Club.

Junior surf meet part of OceanFest
The inaugural HIC PRO Junior, a 1-star surf event for junior men and women, will be held Aug. 20-22 at Kuhio Beach.
The ASP Hawaii contest will be part of Duke’s OceanFest off Waikiki later this month. It will be one of 12 events on the ASP Hawaii schedule that has pro contests for men, women, juniors and long boarders.
