It’s World Series with Shane, Kolten
No matter who wins, it will be a World Series to remember for Hawaii fans. The Boston Red Sox boast Maui’s own Shane Victorino, who propelled his team onto baseball’s greatest stage with a grand slam to win the American League championship.
In the National League, Hilo’s Kolten Wong made the St. Louis Cardinals’ series roster in the knick of time; the rookie second baseman is expected to add speed off the bench. Following the national pastime is even better when we get to root for two hometown heroes.
Game 1 is today, with St. Louis at Boston, and will be televised starting about 2:05 p.m. on KHON-TV. Play ball!
Feats of Clay worth recognition
In an honor befitting an Olympics decathlon gold medalist, Bryan Clay now has a fitness park named after him.
With equipment stations at the new Bryan Clay Exercise Park off 18th Avenue and Diamond Head Road, donor Clark Hatch is out to promote health. And, he says, to recognize Clay, "a quiet, humble guy, and I don’t think the state or city and county has really afforded him any recognition as the world’s greatest athlete."
He’s got a point: While Clay draws respect and admiration, it’s not a red-hot popularity or fawn-fest. Instead, when the 1998 Castle High School alum returns to Hawaii, which he routinely does, it tends to be for great community causes such as keiki clinics and health-and-fitness fairs.
What does a stellar athlete have to do to get some recognition anyway — marry a Kardashian? On second thought: Quiet, humble and substantial are just fine with us.
