Quarterback Taylor Graham took some reps during Tuesday’s practice, but his availability remains in question for Saturday’s road game against UNLV.
Graham started the first three games, but missed the past two because of an injury to his left (non-throwing) shoulder.
"He looked OK," Chow said of Graham’s limited workout.
For now, Chow said: "We’ll just have to make the decision between the other two; hopefully, play them both."
Sean Schroeder and Ikaika Woolsey were both in the opening lineup against San Jose State this past Saturday. Woolsey was at quarterback, Schroeder aligned as a receiver. Woolsey ran a quarterback draw. Schroeder then moved to quarterback.
Schroeder was 28-for-50 for 342 yards and three touchdowns. But he was intercepted three times. Woolsey’s only completion in three throws went for 44 yards.
Whether Graham is available or not, expect: 1) Woolsey to have an expanded role, and 2) Jeremy Higgins to be included in the 64-player travel roster. Higgins, who runs the scout team, made UH’s first two trips this season.
Cofer at tight end
This fall, Craig Cofer has worn two blank jerseys each practice — a black jersey for when he is a defensive end, a white top when he is a tight end.
On Tuesday, he wore a white No. 86 jersey, an indication he will play tight end, at least through this weekend.
"I love to play defense," Cofer said, "but offense is something I plan to enjoy learning."
The tight end’s role has changed the past few weeks. In most sets, the tight end is aligned in the backfield. It gives the appearance of a fullback, although the so-called motion tight end is used to block the edge rusher or curl in the flats as a receiver.
Cofer said he is learning how to read defensive fronts from offensive line coach Chris Naeole. Quarterback coach Jordan Wynn has helped Cofer recognize coverages.
"I’m really focused on the mental part of the game," Cofer said.
UTI FOR THE DEFENSE
Cofer’s move opens the way for Niko Uti to enter the rotation on the defensive line.
"I’m going where the team needs me," Uti said.
Cofer said: "Uti is happy. As long as people are happy, it’s a good move."
Uti, who is 6-2 and 260 pounds, can play both defensive end and the three-technique tackle.
Uti and slotback Donnie King were both members of Kapolei High’s class of 2010 class. Uti went to Snow Junior College, where he redshirted a year and then played two seasons. He transferred to UH in January.
"I decided to walk on," Uti said. "I made the team, and here I am."
Langkilde back in action
Marcus Langkilde will provide manpower at running back.
Joey Iosefa (foot) and Faga Wily (concussion) have been injured, leaving the Rainbow Warriors to rotate Steven Lakalaka and Diocemy Saint Juste at running back.
Langkilde missed the past couple of games because of shoulder issues.
Langkilde was a fullback in spring ball. He moved to running back in training camp.
"I’m slimming down, getting a little quicker," said Langkilde, who has lost 15 pounds and now weighs 220.
