Man accused in Kalihi robbery
Prosecutors on Wednesday charged a 19-year-old man in the robbery of a man and his guests at his Kalihi apartment.
Dion Kitzmiller, who police said does not have a local address, was charged with one count of first-degree robbery. A 38-year-old man who was with him was released pending further investigation.
Police said the two entered the apartment and demanded money from the man, 49, and his guests, another man, 36, and woman, 39.
One of them was able to escape and call police.
Arriving officers caught one of the suspects in the apartment. The other tried to run away, but officers caught him a short distance away, police said.
Police said they recovered items taken in the robbery.
Suspect arrested in MP assault
A 20-year-old Wahiawa man was arrested Monday night after a military police officer was assaulted at the Schofield Barracks post exchange, Honolulu police said.
Army military police responded to a report of a fight at 9:37 p.m. at the base’s exchange. The suspect assaulted the first responding officer, police said.
He was subdued by other officers and arrested for suspicion of first-degree assault of a law enforcement officer. He was later released pending further investigation, police said.
Paddleboarder hospitalized
A paddleboarder in his 50s was in critical condition Wednesday at Kewalo Basin Waterfront Park after surfers brought him to shore, the Emergency Medical Services Division reported.
The surfer was taken by ambulance to a hospital in critical condition.
No further details were available
Man charged on firearms counts
Hawaii County police have charged a man who was arrested last week in connection with a report of gunshots in Hilo last month.
Kevin Kuhia, 34, who has no permanent address, was charged with first-degree reckless endangering, unauthorized control of a motor vehicle and firearms violations. His bail was set at $70,000.
On Sept. 30, Hilo patrol officers responded to a report that a man had fired several rounds from a red Mazda Miata in front of a house on Elama Street in the Panaewa area. On Oct. 3, police found the car and Kuhia in a vacant lot on Lehua Street in the Fern Acres subdivision in Puna.
Man’s body found after fire in Waiehu home
Maui police are investigating a house fire in Waiehu Wednesday morning as a possible case of arson and suicide after the body of a man was found in the house.
Firefighters responded to the alarm at 1364 Kakae Place at 6:21 a.m.
Police said they were also called at 6:19 a.m. after a report of possible abuse in progress at the house.
Arriving officers saw the rear of the home engulfed in flames and were told that the 52-year-old homeowner had ignited the blaze and fired several gunshots in the house.
The fire was brought under control at 7:11 a.m. and firefighters discovered charred remains of a man along with the remains of three dogs. Another injured dog was turned over to a local animal rescue organization for treatment, police said.
The remains are believed to be of the homeowner, but the body has not been positively identified.
Burglary report ends in arrest of suspect
Hawaii County police, responding to the report of a triggered burglar alarm Wednesday morning, arrested an 18-year-old man for allegedly breaking into a business at the Waiakea Center in Hilo.
Officers saw a man running away and discovered entry had been made into one of the businesses. They established a perimeter around the industrial area and arrested a suspect at 2:20 a.m.
The suspect was taken to the Hilo police cellblock on suspicion of second-degree burglary while detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section continue the investigation.
