Sea Warriors men lose on road
Malte Ziegenhagen scored 21 points, hitting five of his team’s 13 3-pointers, but it was not enough as Hawaii Pacific fell to host Dixie State 83-66 in a men’s basketball game Monday night in St. George, Utah.
The loss drops the Sea Warriors (9-15, 6-11) into seventh place in the conference standings, one spot outside of a berth into next week’s league tournament in Azusa, Calif.
HPU will need to beat Chaminade in Saturday’s regular-season finale and have Academy of Art (8-15, 6-10) lose twice to make the six-team tourney.
Marko Cukic scored 12 points, Jelany White had 11 and Kawika Lyons 10 for HPU, which was outrebounded 45-28. McKay Massey and Zach Robbins had 15 points each for the Red Storm (19-6, 14-3), who moved into first place by a half-game over Grand Canyon and Chaminade.
BYUH’s Medlock is hoops player of week
Brigham Young-Hawaii junior center DeAndre Medlock was named the conference player of the week in men’s basketball after helping the Seasiders go 2-0 last week.
Medlock scored 38 points, with 14 rebounds and three blocks. He shot 72 percent from the floor, hitting 15 of 21 shots as BYUH defeated Azusa Pacific and Dixie State.

» C.J. Brown, Hawaii Hilo: The senior guard scored 14 points with eight assists and four steals in the Vulcans’ 78-62 win over Hawaii Pacific.
» Micah Dunhour, Notre Dame de Namur: The sophomore guard out of Academy of the Pacific scored 40 points in a 0-2 week for the Argos.
» De’Andre Haskins, Chaminade: The senior guard led the Silverswords to an 81-74 win over Azusa Pacific, scoring 19 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
» Michael Melonas, Hawaii Hilo: The senior forward scored 17 points, going 7-for-7 from the field, in the win over the Sea Warriors.
» Bennie Murray, Chaminade: The senior guard kept the Silverswords in the hunt for the conference title with 20 points and seven rebounds. He was 8-for-8 from the line and 4-for-7 from 3-point range.
Hawaii Pacific women top Dixie State
Susannah Walmsley scored 21 points, 12 on four 3-pointers to lead Hawaii Pacific to a 79-72 win over Dixie State on Monday in St. George, Utah.
The victory moves the Sea Warriors (17-6, 13-4) within a half-game of conference leader Grand Canyon while spoiling senior night for the Red Storm (11-6, 13-12). Melody Ladrido scored 18 and Skye Savini 16 for HPU, which was coming off Saturday’s upset of No. 19 Grand Canyon.
The win clinches a top-two finish for the Sea Warriors, guaranteeing them a first-round bye in next week’s conference tournament at Azusa, Calif. HPU ends the regular season against host Chaminade on Saturday. If the Sea Warriors end up tied with Grand Canyon, HPU would earn the top seed via the tiebreaker.
HPU’s Thoemmes is player of the week
Hawaii Pacific junior forward Mikela Thoemmes was named the conference player of the week in women’s basketball after helping the Sea Warriors to two critical one-point road victories last week.
The Roosevelt High product came off the bench to average double-doubles with 13.5 points and 12.5 rebounds, including an 8.5 average on the offensive boards. In the 62-61 win at Hawaii Hilo, Thoemmes set an HPU single-game record for rebounds with 20.
In the 64-63 upset of No. 19 Grand Canyon, she scored 11 points in 23 minutes, including six of HPU’s 14 points in the final 5:17.

Kamie Imai,Hawaii Hilo: The junior guard out of Waiakea scored 12 points with 11 rebounds, six assists and three steals in the 62-61 loss to HPU.
Golf
Hilo’s Sawada leads invitational
Sophomore Kristen Sawada took a two-stroke lead into today’s second round of the St. Edward’s Invitational in Austin, Texas.
The Mililani High product carded a 7-over 78, the only golfer to break 80 in winds of 20-35 mph at the Grey Rock Golf Club. The Vulcans were at 343, 19 strokes behind leader and host St. Edward’s.
Baseball
HPU’s Doi is region player of week
Hawaii Pacific’s Russell Doi was named the NCBWA West Region player of the week after helping the Sea Warriors win three of five nonconference games over Northwest Nazarene.
The senior second baseman went 9-for-17 with seven runs scored and three RBIs.
