It appears that Sean Schroeder and Jeremy Higgins have emerged as the Hawaii football team’s top two quarterbacks.
Schroeder and Higgins rotated during the scrimmage-like drills on Saturday.
Head coach Norm Chow said he was not yet ready to name a No. 1 quarterback, "but we’re getting close."
It has been evident that Schroeder and Higgins have played well during the Warriors’ first three practices of training camp.
"They’ve been doing some good things," Chow said.
David Graves, who started two games in 2011, entered spring training as the No. 1 quarterback.
But Higgins was effective in the three spring scrimmages to ascend into a tie atop the depth chart at quarterback. Higgins is a 2009 Saint Louis School graduate who redshirted in 2011 after transferring from Utah State.
Schroeder transferred to UH this summer after earning a bachelor’s degree at Duke. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining.
Schroeder has made an easy adjustment to the Warriors’ pro-set offense, which was installed this year after 13 seasons in the four-wide attack. Schroeder said Duke used a variation of the current UH offense.
"This is a new program for me, but it’s kind of like a free-agent deal," Schroeder said. "I don’t have much playing time at this level, but I’ve been involved in practices, and I’m very comfortable with this setting."
During the scrimmage, Schroeder drew praise when he scrambled away from pressure and shoveled a pass to a receiver in the flat.
But Chow also acknowledged the quarterbacks had difficult moments.
"We’re going to look at the tape," Chow said. "There were a couple of bad throws we have to check out."
Overall, Chow said, Saturday’s 2-hour practice was "as good a third day of practice as I’ve had in a long time. The effort was great. The execution needs to improve, I would say, but it wasn’t for a lack of effort. For a hot Saturday afternoon, I thought our guys performed very well."
