Fisher excels in Best of West
Hawaii Baptist outside hitter Mike Fisher made a splash at the recent Best of the West volleyball tournament in Poway, Calif.
Fisher averaged seven kills per set as the Eagles, an Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II program, placed ninth out of 32 teams. With Fisher, a 6-foot-4 senior, leading HBA in kills, blocks and aces, HBA defeated Servite and Silverado and lost to Mira Costa in pool play. The Eagles lost to Redondo Union, and beat Buchanan and La Costa Canyon in gold-bracket competition.
D-II team triumphs
Punahou’s Division II team won the recent McKinley volleyball tournament, edging the host Tigers 27-25 for the title.
Heavy favorite Kamehameha-Hawaii, currently ranked No. 2 in the Star-Advertiser Boys Volleyball Top 10, reached the semifinal round, but returned to Hawaii island due to a flight commitment and didn’t play for the title.
Crusaders get gift
Saint Louis alumnus Gabe Lee presented his alma mater with a check for $150,000 recently.
Lee is a 1976 graduate and current chairman of the board of trustees.
“We are so privileged to have such a great example of the Saint Louis man in Gabe Lee,” school president Walter Kirimitsu said in a news release.
Expedited plans to build the Ching Athletic Complex, with Gerber Field House deteriorating, prompted the donation.
“If everyone gave just a little, we can get this built quickly,” Lee said.
