UH trio named NFCA scholar-athletes
University of Hawaii softball players Jori Jasper, Kelly (Majam) Elms and Sharla Kliebenstein were named Division I All-America Scholar-Athletes by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association on Monday.
The award goes to players submitted by a member coach with grade-point averages of 3.50 or higher during the 2012-13 academic year.
Elms is the first Rainbow Wahine to earn the distinction five times, including her redshirt year. She posted a 4.0 and graduated in the spring. She is a finalist for the NCAA Woman of the Year award to be presented Oct. 20 in Indianapolis.
Jasper is a four-time NFCA scholar-athlete entering her senior season. She graduated last fall as a triple major and had a 3.77 GPA. She is pursuing a master’s degree in sociology.
Kliebenstein, a senior, was named an NFCA scholar-athlete for the second straight year. The sociology major had a 3.81 GPA.
Washington infielder Kimberlee Souza, an ‘Iolani graduate, also made the list with a 3.58 GPA.
Six Chaminade players were named to the Division II list — Ashley Phelps (3.71), Brett Aspel (3.68), Dominique Bocanegra (3.71), Kristiann Endow (3.89), Rayna Strom-Okimoto (3.58) and Shannan Hokama (3.82).
