The University of Hawaii football team will be without its top running back for the next four games, head coach Norm Chow confirmed on Wednesday.
Joey Iosefa, a fourth-year junior from American Samoa, said he will have a pin inserted into his injured left foot.
The recovery period is about four weeks. There is a likelihood Iosefa will be ready for the two-game road trip against Utah State and Navy in early November.
Iosefa fractured his left foot while training in July. He chose non-surgical rehabilitation.
Iosefa did not participate in training camp or play in the Rainbow Warriors’ first two games.
He said he "tweaked" his left foot on the Warriors’ opening drive against Nevada on Saturday.
"We tried (non-surgical rehabilitation)," Chow said. "It didn’t work. Let’s get it done from here. (The procedure) will fix him once and for all."
Iosefa said: "If we put a pin in, coming back, it’ll be solid. We won’t have to worry about it again."
Iosefa said he does not regret delaying surgery.
"Hindsight is 20-20," Iosefa said.
Chow said a surgery date has not been set, but it will be "sooner than later."
Iosefa is a 2009 Fagaitua High graduate. He grayshirted that fall and redshirted in 2010.
He started 11 games in 2011 and seven in 2012.
Chow said Diocemy Saint Juste, Steven Lakalaka and Marcus Langkilde will rotate at running back against 25th-ranked Fresno State this Saturday.
Faga Wily, who missed the Nevada game because of concussion-like symptoms, is not expected to be available.
