University of Hawaii punter Alex Dunnachie was suspended today for an indefinite number of football games, hours after he pleaded no contest to a drunken driving charge in Honolulu District Court.

UH head coach Norm Chow announced the suspension today but said Dunnachie will be allowed to participate in training camp which started this week. Dunnachie, who is the team’s only punter, will re-join the team Monday.

“I have to rebuild that relationship with the coaches and the rest of my teammates and show I’m worthy of being back on the team,” he said today before Chow announced his punishment.

He is scheduled to be sentenced on the DUI charge on Aug. 24. He was also cited for driving without a license and without a valid safety check. 

Dunnachie, 21, was arrested July 7 at 2:30 a.m. on Piikoi Street on suspicion of drunken driving. He said today he does have a license but he did not have it with him when he was pulled over.

Dunnachie, who has NFL aspirations and is one of UH’s top pro prospects this season, was held out of Thursday’s opening practice.

He said he met with the team last month and apologized for the incident, the third by a UH football player since March.
