Hilo fire springs from mattress
A fire that broke out in a Hilo home Sunday morning started in a mattress, Hawaii County fire officials said.
Firefighters arrived at the single-room fire on Aipuni Street at about 11:40 a.m. to find flames coming out of a ground-floor window of the two-story tile-and-wood structure, officials said.
No injuries were reported, and the Red Cross was called to assist occupants who might have been affected.
The fire was under control at 11:44 a.m. and extinguished at 11:49 a.m. Officials said the cause is under investigation.
Officials closed Aipuni Street to traffic at Kaumana Drive for approximately an hour.
Seattle hiker hurt on trail
A 33-year-old hiker from Seattle was injured Saturday while hiking along Kauai’s Hanakapiai Trail, county officials said.
Rescuers located the visitor about a quarter-mile from Hanakapiai Falls after they were told at about 5 p.m. that he had possibly broken his ankle, officials said.
A rescue specialist airlifted the man back to a landing zone, where he was loaded in another helicopter and flown to Lihue Airport. Medics at the airport took him to Wilcox Memorial Hospital.
Victim found in pool ID’d
Police have identified a 38-year-old California man who died after he ended up submerged in a pool in Haleakala National Park.
Maui County police say firefighters pulled Rajeesh Padmanabhan from the Pools of Oheo, also called Seven Sacred Pools, a popular hiking site in Kipahulu, Friday afternoon.
Padmanabhan was visiting from San Ramon, Calif.
