The Hawaii Rainbow Wahine basketball team will make its first postseason appearance in 10 years in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament.

The WNIT announced its selections to the 64-team event today. UH (17-13) will play at San Diego (21-9) of the West Coast Conference on Thursday.

The Wahine were upset by Cal State Fullerton in the second round of the Big West tournament last Wednesday. First-year coach Laura Beeman was optimistic for an at-large berth to the WNIT, the sport’s secondary postseason event to the NCAA tournament.

“I know it’s been 10 years since we were in the WNIT and it’s only the seventh time in the history of the program,” Beeman said. “The first time in 10 years, that’s not a bad gig. Not a bad gig.”

USD was the runner-up in the West Coast Conference, losing to Gonzaga in the WCC tournament championship. The Toreros were 12-4 at their home arena, Jenny Craig Pavilion, for the season.

UH made the last of four straight trips to the WNIT in 2003 under Vince Goo.
