86 tons recyled in phone book drive
A monthlong drive to recycle old, unwanted phone books on Oahu has generated nearly 86 tons of recyclable waste.
Officials for Hawaiian Telcom Yellow Pages and its sales agent say more than 170,000 directories were deposited at four drop-off points at malls around the island.
Officials say the directories will be recycled in several different ways. Some of the books will be used to generate fuel for Hawaiian Electric Co.
Prison escapee denies guilt
A Kailua-Kona man has pleaded not guilty in an escape from Hawaii Community Correctional Center in December.
Ryan Jeffries-Hamar was one of two men who allegedly assaulted an unarmed 63-year-old adult corrections officer, stole the law librarian’s car and escaped from the Hilo jail on Dec. 5, the Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported.
Hilo Circuit Judge Glenn Hara on Thursday set a June 17 trial date. The trial is expected to take about two weeks.
The escape prompt-ed a widespread manhunt for Jeffries- Hamar, 31, and Jarvis Naoki Higa, 35, of Hilo.
Higa was arrested Dec. 7 in Ocean View, while Jeffries-Hamar was caught Dec. 13 in Hawaiian Beaches.
Both face numerous felony charges and are being held without bail at Halawa Correctional Facility on Oahu.
Higa, who was being held at HCCC on an attempted murder charge before the escape, has a court appearance scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday before Hilo District Judge Harry Freitas.
Injured Molokai hiker rescued
Rescue crews on Molokai helped a 59-year-old female tourist from Canada who broke her ankle while hiking on Halawa Valley Trail.
Firefighters from Kaunakakai and Pukoo responded to the call at 12:38 p.m. Friday.
Maui County officials said it took about an hour for the first fire units to get to the injured hiker.
The woman, from Calgary, Alberta, had been hiking with family members and they were almost two miles up the waterfall trail, the county said in a statement. The patient was carried down the trail on a backboard, and taken by ambulance to Molokai General Hospital.
