It will at once be familiar and foreign.
Because of a logistical hangup, the Hawaii soccer team was forced to relocate from the customary site of its home matches — the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium — to its on-campus practice field for the Rainbow Wahine’s contest today against Hawaii Pacific.
Kickoff time was also moved up from 7 p.m. to 4:30. The match was to be televised on OC Sports but is no longer.
Game admission is still free, though lower campus parking costs $6.
The site between Les Murakami Stadium and the UH football practice field was last used for official games in the 1999 season, when the team transitioned from the Ala Wai Field to Waipio.
"I think it’s going to be a little weird," UH coach Michele Nagamine said. "Just because we’re used to a routine that we have down. But I think it’s going to be a good test of mental toughness. There is a lot of familiarity there, but it’s also our training field.
"Ironically, staying home and playing on your practice field takes you out of your comfort zone for a game. Weird but true."
A move was made on Tuesday because permitting for WPSS was not achieved in time for the HPU game, which was a late add-on to the UH schedule when two Division I teams backed out on the Wahine, Nagamine said. The Big West normally has a policy against its teams playing Division II schools in soccer, but an exception was made this time.

Nagamine was optimistic a permit could be achieved from the City and County of Honolulu as recently as a week ago, but at least one signature needed to play at Waipio could not be acquired in time.
"It was kind of a glaring example of what needs to be fixed in the system," she said.
The coach said the annual alumnae game scheduled for Sunday is also off with Waipio unavailable.
UH (4-4) presses on with its final action before its second season of Big West play. The Wahine are coming off a split of their second road trip of the season — a 4-1 defeat at Arizona on Friday and a hard-fought 1-0 overtime win at Northern Arizona on Sunday.
Compared to the blustery, high-altitude conditions in Flagstaff, Ariz., UH junior captain Krystal Pascua has no qualms about playing on the practice field.
"You know, I don’t think it’s going to be any different than any game we’ve played," said Pascua, who lately has been slotted at attacking center midfielder. "We play on different fields all the time and we practice on this field all the time. So it should be fine."
The programs are well connected. Nagamine led the Sea Warriors from 2008 to 2010 in her first college coaching job. HPU coach Gina Brewer, a former Rainbow Wahine assistant, is assisted by Wahine alum Joelle Sugai, who is engaged to UH assistant coach Marc Fournier. And HPU junior Ashlyn Ubongen is a transfer from UH.
"It’s a fun opportunity for us to play against each other," Brewer said. "To be able to grow Hawaii soccer, we need to be able to have these types of competitions. Just help support each other in every way we can so both programs can grow and be the best that they can be."
UH is 10-0 all-time against HPU, including a 6-2 victory in 2011.
HPU (2-2) has played all four of its matches on Atherton Field in Kaneohe. Both of the Sea Warriors’ wins came against Chaminade.
