Kauai pedestrian killed by vehicle
A 26-year-old Kauai woman died Saturday morning after she was struck by a sport utility vehicle as she walked on the shoulder of Kaumualii Highway.
The incident occurred just before 9 a.m. near the Kipu Road junction. Police said the woman was walking east, opposite traffic. The woman, from Waimea, died at the scene.
The SUV driver of the SUV, an 84-year-old Kalaheo man, was not injured.
Kaumualii Highway was closed for more than three hours after the accident.
Toddler run over by pickup truck
Authorities say a 3-year-old boy died on Hawaii island Friday after he was run over by a pickup truck.
Hawaii News Now reports the accident happened Friday afternoon on Ohia Avenue in the Eden Roc Estates Subdivision.
Police say the toddler was playing in the parked truck when it shifted into gear and started to move. The boy jumped out, and the truck rolled over him.
Paramedics rushed the child to Hilo Medical Center, where he died.
Investigators say the incident occurred when the boy’s parents were working and he was being watched by his grandfather.
Firefighters aid injured hiker
A 56-year-old visitor was taken to Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital on Friday after injuring her ankle while hiking in Kokee.
The Australian resident had been hiking along the Pihea Trail at 3:23 p.m. and was about three-quarters of a mile in when she hurt her ankle.
Firefighters from Waimea and Hanapepe found the woman, placed her in a wheeled litter and brought her to the trailhead, where awaiting medics transported her to the hospital.
