Nation pauses on 9/11 to pay tribute to victims
Carrie Bergonia of Pennsylvania looked over the name of her fianceé, firefighter Joseph Ogren, at the 9/11 Memorial during ceremonies marking the 12th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York today.
NEW YORK » A ceremony in New York marking the 12th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks has ended after the names of the victims were read aloud over several hours.
It began with a solemn bell toll and a moment of silence at the World Trade Center site. The moment of silence at 2:46 a.m. today Hawaii time marked the time when the first plane hit the twin towers on a clear, sunny day in 2001. Then, families of the victims started reading the names of those who died.
Relatives and friends spoke of how they still missed their loved ones despite the years that have passed, and promised never to forget them.
Ceremonies were also held in Washington and in Shanksville, Pa. The other hijacked planes crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington, Va., and a field near the small western Pennsylvania town.
