The Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas is expected to cut its electricity bill by about one-third as a result of energy efficiency improvements made at the Maui hotel.

The project included the replacement of more than 9,500 incandescent light bulbs with light emitting diodes, which cut energy used for lighting by 80 percent. The hotel also added a control system that monitors carbon monoxide levels in the garage and operates exhaust fans only when needed.

Officials from the state’s main energy conservation and efficiency program, Hawaii Energy, today presented the hotel management with a rebate check for $215,657 that covered more than half the cost of the $385,353 project. The incentive is the largest to date presented by Hawaii Energy to a Maui business.

The Westin is projected to save 1.9 million kilowatt hours of electricity a year, cutting its electricity bill by about one-third. With the price of electricity on Maui running about 32 cents a kilowatt hour the project is expected to pay for itself in less than  six month after the rebate is factored in.
