Wahine advance to diving championships
UH diver Aimee Harrison finished fourth on the 1-meter platform Friday at the NCAA Diving Zone E Qualifying Meet. Harrison advances to next week’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Indianapolis, where she’s set to participate in all three diving events.
Harrison was sixth after the preliminary round and finished with 567.4 points, 45 behind winner Haley Ishimatsu of USC.
Harrison, a freshman from Winnipeg, Canada, was named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Diver of the Year after winning the platform and 3 meters at the conference championship. She placed fourth at the Canadian Winter Nationals earlier this month.
Teammates Lauren Hall (26th) and Genevieve Bradley (36th) did not advance out of prelims. Hawaii’s Luke Hayes was 18th in the 3-meter men’s prelims and finished 17th with 586.95 points.
Thursday, Harrison took eighth on the 3-meter board and Hall was 18th, while Bradley did not advance to the final round. Hayes was 11th on the 1-meter board.
The meet closes today with platform diving, which Hayes won at the MPSF Championship.
Wahine whip Long Beach in water polo
Monika Eggens fired in six goals to lead the No. 8 Hawaii water polo team to a 12-7 victory over No. 9 Long Beach State on Friday in Long Beach, Calif.
The victory by UH (9-5 overall, 2-0 Big West) snapped a 14-match winning streak by the 49ers (17-3, 0-1).
On Thursday, Eggens and Amarens Genee each scored three goals as the Rainbow Wahine upset No. 6 UC Irvine in a 12-11 sudden-death overtime thriller at Aztec Aquatics Complex in Irvine, Calif.
UH led 8-5 in the third, but the Anteaters scored five consecutive goals to take a 10-8 lead entering the fourth period. The Wahine scored two goals to tie it. Neither team scored in the first overtime, and both teams scored a goal in the second, sending the match into sudden death.
Oda up by 3 at State Amateur golf tourney
John Oda shot a 2-under 70 and holds a three-shot lead after the second round of the Hawaii State Amateur and Senior Amateur Stroke Play championship at Pearl Country Club on Friday.
Oda’s 11-under total of 133 leads Jared Sawada, who is at 136 after shooting a 66 on Friday. Only two other golfers — Shawn Lu (6-under 138) and Tyler Ota (4-under 140) — are under par.
In the Senior division, David Hamada shot 2-under 70 for a one-shot lead over Phil Anamizu (71—144).
HPU wins 2, loses 1 in baseball
Mitch Manning had two hits and two RBIs to lead Dixie State (12-6-1, 5-5-1 PacWest) past Hawaii Pacific 5-2 in a conference baseball game at Hans L’Orange Park on Friday. The Sea Warriors are 17-5, 8-2.
The Sea Warriors swept the Red Storm on Thursday. Joshua Garcia pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts and Jordan Oshiro was 3-for-4 with two RBIs in an 8-0 win in the opener. Oshiro went 3-for-3 with two runs scored in a 7-3 win in the second game.
