LAS VEGAS » Punter Alex Dunnachie is expected to be held out of the Hawaii football team’s training camp until after he appears in District Court on Aug. 3 to answer to a drunken-driving accusation.
Head coach Norm Chow said will wait for Dunnachie to enter a plea before deciding on the punishment.
Dunnachie was arrested at 2:30 a.m. on July 7. He was released 2 hours later after posting $500 bail.
The Warriors report to training camp on Aug. 1. Their first practice is on Aug. 2.
During spring break, backup quarterback Cayman Shutter was arrested on a DUI allegation. He was suspended from team activities for the final four weeks of spring training. Shutter entered a not-guilty plea in District Court. But this past June, he pled no contest and was fined and ordered to attend classes for driver’s education and substance-abuse awareness. Chow suspended Shutter for the first four games of the 2012 season.
Backup linebacker Alema Tachibana was arrested on a DUI allegation on June 18. He pled not guilty on July 16, and subsequently was suspended indefinitely. His trial is scheduled for Oct. 15.
Dunnachie is the only punter on the UH roster. He is considered to be one of the Warriors’ top pro prospects.
Receiver Chinedu Amadi, who punted in high school, has been practicing at the position.
If Dunnachie receives an extended suspension, Chow said, "We’re going to use our most creative skills in all of our combined years of coaching experience to come up with a kicking game. Watch out for the third-down quick kick. Watch out for the wildcat. Watch out for everything."
Chow expressed disappointment in Dunnachie’s situation because the Warriors had been warned the day before the arrest. Dunnachie also served on the team’s leadership committee.
"It hurts," Chow said. "It’s a blow to our football team. But the lesson we learn, the lesson we teach, is more important than getting a 45-yard punt."
