Wild finish sets up tourney seeds
Hawaii Pacific’s overtime win over Chaminade on Saturday night dropped the Silverswords to third place and into Thursday’s first-round game with the Sea Warriors at the PacWest men’s basketball tournament in Azusa, Calif.
Had Chaminade won, the Silverswords would have earned a bye into Friday’s semifinals as the No. 2 seed. Instead, the Sea Warriors rallied from 13 points down late in regulation and defeated Chaminade in overtime.
Chaminade, seeded third, and HPU, seeded sixth, meet at 3:30 p.m. at Azusa Pacific’s Felix Event Center. Fifth-seeded Brigham Young-Hawaii faces fourth seed Dominican in Thursday’s second game.
The winners advance to Friday’s semifinals, where conference champion Dixie State is the top seed and Grand Canyon No. 2. The championship is Saturday.
On the women’s side, Hawaii Pacific defeated Chaminade on Saturday to earn the top seed and a first-round bye into the conference tournament. The Sea Warriors finished tied for second with Grand Canyon but had the head-to-head tiebreaker; Cal Baptist, ineligible for the tournament while transitioning to Division II status, won the PacWest title.
HPU will face the winner of Thursday’s first-round game between fourth seed Dixie State and No. 5 Hawaii Hilo. In Thursday’s second game, BYUH, seeded sixth, plays third seed Academy of Art.
