A roadside memorial at Mililani District Park for Honolulu police officer Chad Morimoto displays a photo taken on his last day of HPD motorcycle class. The eight-year veteran was fatally injured Monday in a crash during a training exercise. The city Medical Examiner’s office said Tuesday that Morimoto died of blunt force injuries to his torso. Morimoto is standing second from left. Edward Tabanera, kneeling below him, calls the photo a graduation picture of the new motorcycle officers. Tabanera and officer Kepi Visoria, second from right, were at the Lanikuhana Avenue site to pay their respects.

Honolulu police officer Chad Morimoto died of blunt force injuries to his torso from a motorcycle crash, the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s office said Tuesday.

His death was ruled an accident.

Morimoto, 39, was involved in a VIP escort training exercise in Mililani about 11:40 a.m. Monday when his motorcycle apparently slid from under him and struck a curb, police said.

He was taken in critical condition to Pali Momi Medical Center, where he died.
