Big projects are heating up all over town, but at least one has been delayed. The transformation of THEhotel to Delano Las Vegas at Mandalay Bay will miss its deadline, which was originally announced for the first quarter of 2014.
Citing a busy end of the year for bookings, Mirage Resorts International says it will delay the start of construction until March, with an unveiling now scheduled for “sometime after September 2014.”
In addition to upgrading rooms and public areas, the project will include new bars and lounges, plus a new restaurant and Delano-branded spa.
Sirens pause: The Sirens of TI free outdoor show will go dark at the end of the month to facilitate construction on a new retail center at Treasure Island. The final shows before the hiatus will be Oct. 21, with nightly performances of the sexy pirate battle picking up, albeit in a slightly truncated space, on Dec. 25.
Cosmo’s social hour: The third-floor restaurants at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, collectively referred to as P3 Commons, have initiated “The Social Hour.” It consists of happy hours at Blue Ribbon Sushi, Comme Ca, D.O.C.G., Estiatorio Milos, Jaleo, Scarpetta and STK — some of Las Vegas’ best restaurants — with at least one running every day of the week, and all running concurrently Mondays through Thursdays, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
QUESTION: I read in this column that the former Lady Luck casino is opening downtown in October. Is that still happening?
ANSWER: Rumors have had the Downtown Grand opening as early as late
September, but that didn’t happen. The latest word has the official opening date as Oct. 27.
