Honolulu girl’s healthy recipe leads to White House invitation
A Honolulu girl will represent Hawaii at the White House dinner table Aug. 20 when she dines with Michelle Obama and 53 other winners of the First Lady’s “Healthy Lunchtime Challenge & Kids’ ‘State Dinner.’”
Stefani Shimomura-Sakamoto, 11, submitted her “Scrumptious Salmon Salad Lunch” for the nationwide challenge, posed to children ages 8 to 12 in the 50 states, three U.S. territories and the District of Columbia. The winners will attend a kids’ “State Dinner” and join the First Lady at a lunch featuring a selection of winning recipes. They will also tour the White House kitchen garden.
More than 1,200 entries were submitted.
Obama teamed with the food website Epicurious and the departments of Education and Agriculture for the contest that is part of her Let’s Move initiative.
