Free discussion focuses on obesity
Hear a longtime vegan’s theory on how animal consumption and junk food relate to obesity in a seminar Sept. 19 at Castle Medical Center’s wellness auditorium.
William Harris, a vegetarian since 1950 and a vegan since 1964, discusses obesity and answers other diet-related questions in the free lecture presented by Castle and the Vegetarian Society of Hawaii.

For a bite beforehand, join Harris for a vegan buffet at Castle’s Bistro Restaurant, at the lower level of the center, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The menu features cold and hot dishes. Cost is $10. Registration not required.

Gluten-free, vegan dishes star at meal
Vegan, gluten-free fare never tasted so good: Butternut Squash Soup with Caramelized Walnuts and Chickpea Taro Croquettes are just part of the upcoming gourmet menu for dinner 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 25 at Church of the Crossroads.
Other dishes include Crispy Green Salad with Hibiscus Vinaigrette and Vibrant Beet & Quinoa Pilaf.
Cost is $20 advance, $22 at the door subject to availability. To-go meals will also be available.

Japanese chamber holds foodie event
An impressive lineup of restaurants, including Alan Wong’s, Beachhouse at the Moana, Le Bistro, Il Lupino, and Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar, will be serving up dishes alongside an extensive selection of wines at the 12th Annual Chopsticks & Wine event on Oct. 2.
The Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce event will also feature a special wine tasting, for which there are limited tickets.
The event runs 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Hawaii Convention Center. Cost is $125; wine tasting is $75. Limited tables are also available, starting at $2,500.
