Man wanted in attempted murder arrested
Deputy sheriffs on Monday arrested a 34-year-old Hilo man who was wanted by police on suspicion of attempted murder.
Deputies turned over Jarvis Naoki Higa to Hawaii County police in Mountain View.
Police had asked for help from the public Wednesday in locating Higa.
Higa allegedly threatened another 34-year-old Hilo man with a firearm at the Orchid Manor condominium complex on Kalanianaole Avenue in Hilo.
Spokeswoman Toni Schwartz of the Department of Public Safety said Higa tested positive for illegal drug use, which is a violation of his parole.
Higa had been released on parole July 27, 2011.
Higa was convicted on Nov. 27, 2006, of second-degree robbery.
Suspect in kidnapping appears in court
A 29-year-old Manoa man went to Honolulu District Court on Monday morning for his initial appearance on a first-degree kidnapping charge in connection with the alleged abduction of his ex-girlfriend.
Benjamin Riedel was being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.
Officers arrested Riedel on Saturday after his ex-girlfriend escaped from his Pinao Street home, police said.
The incident began Friday night when the 42-year-old woman’s current boyfriend dropped her off at her apartment in Waikiki at about 10:30 p.m. After her boyfriend left, Riedel allegedly confronted the woman, forced her to drive to his house on Pinao Street and prevented her from leaving by locking the doors and restraining her, police said.
The woman screamed for help after Riedel allegedly threatened and assaulted her, and a 30-year-old man who lives next door went to investigate, police said. The woman got away when Riedel allegedly assaulted his neighbor, police said.
Police officers were called and arrived to find the suspect walking away from the scene.
