Kalaupapa sites await discovery at main library
Damien Tours driver Norman Soares will share stories about the historical sites at Kalaupapa National Historical Park in a free presentation in the first-floor reading room at the Hawaii State Library at 11:45 a.m. Aug. 4.
Kalaupapa is a remote area on Molokai where Hansen’s disease patients were quarantined from 1866 to 1969. Soares will also share information about the patients and the humanitarian efforts of Father Damien, who became a Catholic saint in 2009, and Mother Marianne Cope, who will be canonized Oct. 21.
The Friends of the Library of Hawaii is sponsoring the one-hour program titled “Journey to Kalaupapa: In the Footsteps of Saints," which is suitable for ages 12 and older. The library is located at 478 S. King St.
