UH women lead MPSF swimming, diving
The University of Hawaii women’s 200-yard freestyle relay team set an event record, freshman Lauren Hall won the 1-meter springboard and sophomore Jasmine Alkhaldi led a 1-2-3-5 finish in the 50-yard freestyle as the Rainbow Wahine took the first-day lead Thursday in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Swimming and Diving Championships.
The UH swimmers are competing at East Los Angeles College in Monterey, Calif., and the diving competitions are taking place at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.
Hawaii amassed 240 points on the first day. UC Davis was second with 229 points in the eight-team field. The UH men were seventh of 10 teams with 98 points, with first-place Wyoming totaling 230.5.
Rachel Cote, Katie Stover, Sofia Mustelin and Alkhaldi combined to clock a 1:30.39 in the 200 freestyle relay. Taylor Ritenburg, Stover, Hayden Maclean and Alkhaldi led UH to a second-place finish in the 800-yard medley relay.
Hall dominated the preliminaries, then led from the start in the final round. She accumulated 299.30 points to beat runner-up Raleigh Williams, from BYU, by nearly 13 points. Teammate Aimee Harrison took fourth with 266.20 points and junior Genevieve Bradley was fifth at 260.15.
On the men’s 3 meter, UH’s Luke Hayes was second. He scored 349.75 points to finish behind BYU’s Nicholas Suder.
Cal storms ahead in Burns golf
Top-ranked California turned its three-shot lead after one round into a 16-stroke advantage going into today’s final round of the 37th John A. Burns Intercollegiate.
Three Golden Bears lead the way after two rounds at Turtle Bay’s Palmer Course. Joel Stalter fired a 2-under-par 70 in rainy, windy conditions Thursday to hold onto first at 137. Teammate Max Homa (68) is two shots back. Michael Weaver (70) has a share of third at 142.
Cal shot 6-under 288 Thursday for a team total of 566. Brigham Young, with Maui’s Justin Keiley (73—144), are next at 290—582.
Hawaii Hilo is in eighth at 301—597. Vulcan Dalen Yamauchi (75) is tied for ninth at 147. Cory Oride, Hawaii’s lone senior, leads his team at 76—150. The Rainbows are 10th at 301—603. The UH B team, led by Ryan Kuroiwa (75—150), is 14th at 621. Brigham Young-Hawaii is last at 629 after shooting 310.
