WEEKLY HONORS
Fab Five member named MPI boys hoops coach
Mid-Pacific announced the hiring of former University of Hawaii "Fab Five" member Dwight Holiday as the new boys basketball varsity coach.
Holiday was a starting shooting guard on the iconic basketball team in the early 1970s. That team went 47-8 over a two-year period, including 24-3 his senior year, culminating in an NCAA Tournament bid.
The other Fab Five members were Bob Nash, a former UH men’s basketball coach and No. 1 pick of the Detroit Pistons; Jerome Freeman, John Penebacker and Al Davis.
Holiday was drafted in the ninth round by the Seattle SuperSonics.
Holiday replaces Jason Hopkins, who stepped down earlier this year.
Scott Wagner, the new MPI athletic director, is enthused.
"Coach Holiday is a great addition. He brings a lot of experience as a player and as a coach," Wagner said.
Holiday has coached multiple ILH teams in basketball and tennis. He has not been a head coach at the high school level, but has coached in "NBA-type clinics," Wagner said.
Most recently he has been active in helping his two nephews (Jrue and Justin Holiday), both of whom play in the NBA.
Former Rainbow to coach Govs
Eric Tokunaga has seen baseball talent near and far for years.
Now he gets to develop talent right in the heart of Honolulu. Farrington athletic director Harold Tanaka confirmed that Tokunaga is the new varsity baseball coach.
Tokunaga was an area scout in the Charlotte, N.C., region for the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks. Prior to that, he was a part-time scout for the Kansas City Royals and general manager of the Honolulu Sharks of Hawaii Winter Baseball.
He is now on the faculty at Farrington. Tokunaga was an infielder at UH and made the 1980 College World Series all-tournament team.
