The summer promises day after day of sunshine, but life on the Windward side doesn’t always turn out that way.

Train rides, indoor play areas and a rock-climbing wall have helped to shape Windward Mall into a family-centered establishment. On rainy days, families can take refuge and find an array of activities all under one roof.

"Our goal is to be a family-friendly center," said Alex Kirley, marketing manager of Windward Mall. "Lots of families come to the mall, so it made sense to add amenities for children and families."

Koolau Pets, one of the original stores in the mall, allows visitors to get an up-close view of animals ranging from puppies and parrots to chinchillas and hairless guinea pigs.

Find glow-in-the-dark miniature golf at Glow Putt Mini Golf, where a round of 18 holes costs $7. Replays on the same day cost $5.

The arcade, Tilt, offers an array of games.

The Hokule‘a Voyage of Discovery play area provides the perfect setting for grownups to take a rest as keiki burn off some energy on the soft climbing areas and slides.

At 808 Bounce, colored inflatables including slides, obstacle courses and bounce houses pack a storefront on the second level of the mall. An all-day pass costs $7.50.

Families can explore a rock-climbing wall at SoulTrex. Bouldering 101 classes are offered on Tuesdays at 4 p.m. for children and 5 p.m. for adults. Climbing rates for kids are $2 a day or $15 a month; adults pay $4 a day or $30 a month. Ohana rates are available.

The Cubby Caboose Mini Express, on the lower level near Sears, offers daily train rides. Tickets for all passengers are $3. Children under the age of 1 year are free when seated on thelap of a paid rider.

On Wednesdays, parents can grab some fresh produce from 2:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the farmers market organized by ‘Nalo Farms.

"We were one of the first malls to implement a farmers market. We have more than 55 vendors," Kirley said.
