Evans road race set for Sunday
The Dick Evans Memorial Road Race, considered Hawaii’s premier cycling event and one of the toughest endurance races in the state, is set for Sunday.
The 112-mile event circling the perimeter of Oahu starts at 5:45 a.m. at the Hawaii Kai Park & Ride and includes rolling road closures under police escort. Late registration is available for $140 either online at usacycling.org or at Saturday’s packet pickup from 1 to 4 p.m. at Island Triathlon & Bike on Kapahulu Avenue.
The first finishers are expected back in Hawaii Kai around 11 a.m. The course is part of the original bike portion of the inaugural Ironman, held on Oahu in 1978, and later moved to Kailua-Kona.
Taylor, Ostrowski at Moanalua clinic
Former Punahou girls basketball coach Mike Taylor and Miah Ostrowski, a two-sport athlete at the University of Hawaii, headline the staff of this holiday weekend’s Moanalua High Basketball Camp.
The camp will have two sessions Saturday through Monday at the school’s gym. Session 1 is for ages 6-10 and runs from 8 to 11 a.m., followed by Session 2 for ages 10-17 from noon until 3 p.m.
The cost is $95, or $130 for both sessions. Registration takes place before each of Saturday’s sessions.
Drills include ball control, shooting form, fast-break transition and defense.
Taylor won eight league and four state titles during 10 years with the Buffanblu. Ostrowski played both football and basketball for the Rainbow Warriors.
Also on staff is Moanalua boys coach Byron Mello. For more information, call 864-9113 or email moanaluabasketball@gmail.com.
CrossFit fundraiser for veterans
The third Hawaii VA Loans CrossFit Showdown, billed as the largest competition for the sport in Hawaii, is scheduled for Monday at Blaisdell Arena.
The event runs from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., with a fund-raising goal of $25,000. Proceeds benefit Operation Homefront Hawaii, a nonprofit organization that provides financial and other assistance to families of service members and wounded veterans.
General admission tickets are $10. Team entries are closed, but registration is still open for individuals.
