A woman driving a motorcycle died at the hospital after she hit an off-duty cab turning into a driveway in Makiki this afternoon, police said.

Paramedics took the woman, 32, in "extremely critical condition" to the hospital, where she died.

The 1 p.m. collision happened near 1511 Thurston Ave.

Police believe the woman was riding east in a pack with at least three other motorcyclists. The cab, a black Dodge charger, was turning into a driveway from the westbound lane.

Police are unsure if excessive speed was a factor, but said visibility may have been a factor because the motorcyclist was coming up on a slight hill.

“When you come up, it’s a bit of a blind spot until you hit the crest, and that’s where the car was turning,” said Honolulu Police Department Traffic Division Lt. Robert Towne.

The driver of the vehicle sustained minor injuries from broken glass, but refused treatment at the scene. There was extensive damage to the passenger side door.

That section of Thurston Avenue was closed until 5 p.m.

This was the 13th traffic fatality of the year, compared to 16 for the same period last year, police said.
