City maintenance crews continued to clear Honolulu sidewalks this week, removing 28 shopping carts and hauling away 2.14 tons of waste from Chinatown, Aala Park, Waikiki and Thomas Square.
Authorities said locations selected for enforcement of sidewalk-related ordinances are those where the city has received complaints.
Wednesday’s efforts included Thomas Square, Aala Park, Kamamalu Park, Smith Street, Kukui Gardens, Old College Walk and the Ala Wai Promenade across from the Hawai‘i Convention Center.
Under the city sidewalk ordinance, the city is allowed to remove items deemed "nuisances." The law allows for people to retrieve any item seized by paying a $200 fee.
A sidewalk nuisance is defined as "any object or collection of objects constructed, erected, installed, maintained, kept or operated on or over any sidewalk, including but not limited to stalls, stands, tents, furniture, and containers, and of their contents or attachments."
A separate stored-property ordinance allows the removal of personal items left on city property with 24-hour advance notice.
