Services will be held in August for musician John Koko, the longtime Makaha Sons band member who died last month.
There will be two public viewings in the mauka chapel of Mililani Mortuary-Waipio: 5 to 9 p.m. Aug. 10 and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 11.
The funeral at Mililani Memorial Park will follow the Aug. 11 viewing and the public is invited, said friend and fellow band member Louis "Moon" Kauakahi.
Koko grew up in Nanakuli and began his career with the Makaha Sons of Ni‘ihau in 1982. The group included John, who played bass; his brother Jerome on guitar; Kauakahi on guitar; and well-known Hawaiian singer Israel "Iz" Kamakawiwo‘ole.
The group helped to popularize Hawaiian music.
When Kamakawiwo‘ole left the Makaha Sons of Ni‘ihau in 1993 the group became a trio and changed its name to the Makaha Sons.
Koko, who had heart problems and was looking forward to a transplant, died June 25. He was 51.
Koko is survived by wife, Toni; sons John Jr., Jordon, Jeman and Jerry; and two grandchildren.
