A spirited comeback followed by a rare shutout gave the University of Hawaii softball team a doubleheader split on Saturday and an early start today to close the Bank of Hawaii Invitational.
No. 20/22 UH rallied to an 8-5 win over Campbell in its first game, then was held to one hit in a 5-0 loss to Memphis. A tiebreaker gave UH the third seed in today’s bracket portion of the tournament and the Rainbow Wahine will face Memphis again at 11 a.m.
"It’s going to be interesting because it’s going to be who’s hungrier," UH head coach Bob Coolen said. "It just has to be who’s on their game."
Top-seeded Western Kentucky faces Campbell at 1 p.m. Due to WKU’s travel plans, the Lady Toppers are guaranteed to play in the 3 p.m. game. The final game of the tournament is scheduled for 5 p.m.
UH will try to recharge in time for today’s first game after a roller-coaster doubleheader on Saturday.
The Wahine trailed Campbell 2-0 before UH senior Jessica Iwata hit her first home run of the season in the bottom of the third to tie the game.
"I’ve been long overdue," Iwata said. "But it was nice to get the first one."
Campbell promptly reclaimed the lead on a home run by Courtney Klingler and led 4-2 going into the bottom of the fifth. UH put runners on second and third and Leisha Li’ili’i lined a double off the top of the left-field fence to tie the game.
With two out in the inning, UH second baseman Jazmine Zamora launched a two-run homer to left to give the Wahine their first lead of the game.
"My mom’s here and I just wanted to put on a good show for her," Zamora said.
"I had a job to do and I did it and the fact that I go to hit a home run and my mom was here to see it was the best part of these two games."
UH added insurance runs on RBI doubles by Kelly Majam and Keiki Carlos in the seventh and pitcher Kaia Parnaby closed out her 10th complete game of the season while improving to 9-2.
UH couldn’t muster much offense against Memphis and the Tigers avenged last Wednesday’s loss to the Wahine.
Memphis scratched out an unearned run off Carlos in the first inning and added four more in the second, three coming in on a home run by Morgan Mosby.
Freshman Loie Kesterson made her first appearance at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium and walked the first two batters she faced to load the bases in the second. But she got a strikeout to end the inning and went on to throw 51/3 innings of shutout relief.
"It was nice knowing the people behind me had my back," said Kesterson, who struck out eight and gave up three hits. "I just came out and was thinking one pitch at a time, one batter at a time."
Memphis right-hander Jordan Richwood also struck out eight and allowed just one hit over five innings and reliever Ellen Roberts finished out the shutout, UH’s first since a 4-0 loss at Nevada on April 21, 2012.
"We gave it to them on Wednesday and they came back hard, so it’s a matter of how we can bounce back tomorrow," Iwata said. "We have to come out early so we have to be ready."
