The next Pacific Century Fellows program will include 32 participants from Oahu, the neighbor islands and the military.

The leadership development program, modeled after the White House Fellows program, was started in 1996 by former Mayor Mufi Hannemann.

Participants are chosen based on applications and personal interviews. Through the nine-month program they will have opportunities to connect with community and government leaders on various issues.

The program will begin with a two-day retreat Saturday and Sept. 29. Fellows will take part in at least one daylong program each month on critical issues facing Hawaii in such areas as crime, education, environment, quality of life, the military and the economy.
