Coast Guard airlifts sailor from Navy ship
A 22-year-old male sailor is in stable condition at Tripler Army Medical Center after being airlifted by the Coast Guard from the San Diego-based frigate USS Gary.
A Navy spokesman said that he could not release information about the sailor’s specific medical condition.
Coast Guard launched an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Barber’s Point and a diverted an HC-130 Hercules aircraft from training on Maui to assist in the rescue Tuesday night.
The USS Gary was more than 120 miles from Pearl Harbor when the helicopter airlifted the sailor off the ship at about 7:45 p.m.
The ship is participating in Rim of the Pacific 2012 exercise.
The USS Gary is an Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate with a crew of about 200.
