Chan qualifies for U.S. Amateur
‘Iolani graduate Lorens Chan fired rounds of 68-71 Monday at Honolulu Country Club to earn a place in next month’s U.S. Amateur Championship at Cherry Hills Country Club in Colorado. Chan beat out 30 others from Hawaii, Australia, Canada and New Jersey.
Alternates are Alex Chiarella of Makawao and Bradley Shigezawa from Honolulu.
Oda in eighth at U.S. Junior Amateur
State individual prep champion John Oda shot at even-par 72 after the first round of stroke-play qualifying Monday and is tied for eighth place with 12 other golfers at the U.S. Junior Amateur in Stratham, N.H.
Oda, a junior-to-be at Moanalua High School, trails Max McGreevy of Oklahoma City, Okla., by four strokes heading into today’s final round of stroke play at the Golf Club of New England.
The other local golfer in the field, Richard Hattori of Honolulu, shot a 3-over-par 75.
The low 64 golfers move on to match play starting Wednesday.
Corpuz tied for 20th at Girls’ Juniors
Punahou freshman Allisen Corpuz leads four Hawaii players after shooting a 77 in the first round of qualifying at the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship in Daly City, Calif.
Corpuz is tied for 20th at Lake Merced Golf Club, where the scoring average was just over 81.
Corpuz is followed by Eimi Koga (80), Alexandra Kaui (81) and Ciera Min (85).
Defending champion Ariya Jutanugarn leads after shooting 1-under-par 71, the day’s only sub-par score.
