Hawaii delegation, staff safe in DC
U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz says all members of Hawaii’s federal delegation and their staff are safe and accounted for after shots fired outside the U.S. Capitol prompted a shutdown of the complex.
Schatz said in a statement today that the lawmakers and staff followed appropriate emergency plan procedures.
The delegation includes U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono and U.S. Reps. Colleen Hanabusa and Tulsi Gabbard.
Gabbard issued a statement expressing relief that “all of the staff and members in the Hawaii delegation were safe and accounted for within minutes of the Capitol being locked down.”
“The U.S Capitol Police and all law enforcement today acted quickly to ensure the safety of all visitors, staffers, and members of Congress,” she said.
Witnesses and officials say a woman driving a black Infiniti tried to ram through a White House barricade, then led police on a chase that ended in gunfire outside the Capitol.

The shots came as lawmakers inside the Capitol debated how to end a government shutdown. Police quickly locked down the entire complex for about an hour, and both houses of Congress went into recess.
