Honolulu police will set up driving under the influence checkpoints throughout the summer beginning July 1 through the Fourth of July and Admission Day holidays.

The checkpoints will continue until Aug. 31, and are part of the Honolulu Police Department’s efforts to reduce traffic injuries and death.

HPD urges the public not to drink and drive, and also reminds the public that the legal drinking age is 21.

Promoting intoxicating liquor to an underage person is a crime, a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in prison, HPD said.

On Oahu, 27 people have been killed in 26 traffic collisions. Speed, alcohol and drugs were factors in 17 of those crashes, as compared with 12 at the same time last year. 

During the same time last year, 24 people died in 22 collisions.

Honolulu police have conduct drunken driver checkpoints every week since October 2011.
