World record holder at The Hapalua
Current world marathon record holder Patrick Makau headlines "The Chase" field of The Hapalua, a half marathon race scheduled for March 10 through Waikiki.
Makau set the mark of 2 hours, 3 minutes and 28 seconds at the 2010 Berlin Marathon. The Kenyan’s best half marathon time is 58:52.
In "The Chase," 24 of Hawaii’s top runners — 12 men and 12 women — will be given a head start and a group of professional runners, including Makau, six-time Honolulu Marathon champion Jimmy Muindi and Nicholas Manza, will try to catch up and pass them en route to the Kapiolani Park finish.
Race founder Jim Barahal has created monetary incentives for the elite runners in "The Chase" portion of the 13.1-mile race.
Online registration for The Hapalua is available for individuals and teams.
